Replace snap rings – convert to single hooks: this is how it works
If you fish a lot with artificial bait, you should replace the snap rings or fishhooks on them every now and then. There can be many reasons for this, because on the one hand fish hooks and snap rings rust after a while, on the other hand you might want to mount a sharper hook or convert it to a single hook. In this article I will show you how to do this using the example of a spinner. Many anglers throw away their spinners as soon as the hooks rust. It doesn’t have to be. The triple hook can be replaced very quickly. Of course, the same procedure also works with wobblers, spoons and other artificial baits.
This is how you can easily replace snap rings and hooks
The first step
Step 1
The old hook has to be removed first. In the case of this spinner, a pair of pliers with a silk cutter function helps. This means that the treble hook is simply snapped on at the eye. With wobblers and other artificial baits that are equipped with a snap ring, you can simply remove the old treble hook with the old snap ring.
Now the spinner no longer has a hook, of course, the new hook can be chosen as desired and, for example, a Singles- or Schonhaken to be assembled.
step 2
As shown in the photo below, the next step is to thread the hook onto the snap ring. To do this, open the snap ring with the snap ring pliers and slide it onto the snap ring. Then it is practically not to push the treble through immediately, but push the snap ring onto the eye of the spinner (see photo below). This saves some work by opening the snap ring again.
Finished!
Now the spinner has a snap ring on which the hook can be replaced more easily in the future. It is often a good idea to use hooks of a similar weight or size so as not to alter the course of the bait. This is not so important with spinners, but small wobblers react very sensitively to changes in weight and may no longer run properly.
Chris Tipp:
When fishing for trout, two snap rings in a row are a trick to reduce the dropout rate in the fight (except for wobblers), as the mobility of the hook increases and it becomes more difficult to pry the fish out.
